RHM Doubles at Groveland Oaks (Holly, MI)
Doubles action has highlighted the post-MB6 calendar, so it’s no wonder that another two-on-two event arose over the weekend. In what may turn out to be an annual affair, seven couples swapped spouses for a doubles Monkeyball tournament at the Groveland Oaks Campground in northern Oakland County.
With the kids at the campground, the seven couples with DeWitt/Springbrook ties put names in the hat for the official drawing of partners. Luckily for Commissioner Andy Frushour, his partner Melissa Potter had some serious MB skills hidden in that kindergarten teacher exterior. Team Frushour/Potter swept through four-straight matches to take the inaugural tournament title.
To get to the finals, the champs had to knock out Sarah “No Cuts Allowed” Simon and Ken “Ice Water In His Veins/Shorts” Sipler in the winner’s bracket finals. In the loser’s bracket, Simon and Sipler fell to eventual runners-up Grandma Grace and Glenn “U-M’s 8-Win Season” Simon. (Sorry, Glenn, I meant to ask you about this while around the fire.)
Thanks to Wagonmaster Sarah Gustafson for forcing me to shake the cobwebs off and getting us together for an organized event. Additional thanks to the Siplers for providing the second set of ladder golf equipment (albeit not totally up to Monkeyball regulations).
So, now that you “Rockin’ Hot Mamas” have had a little taste of the Monkeyball experience, I expect full participation at next summer’s World Championships; or at the very least, you’ll take part in one of the next tournaments on Windyrush.
